Through the streets – video post

Here are three similar videos from three very different countries from three very different times.

All of these are fairly long (rendez-vous is shortest at over 8 mins) but strangely mesmerizing. I would not/could not watch more than one in a row, it is best to space the viewings apart.

If you are only going to watch one video and you haven’t seen it, watch the last video!

First we have a lovely video of a tram ride through Barcelona from 1908.

Second is this video clip of a motorcyclist weaving his/her way through heavy traffic on a japanese highway.

and lastly (my favorite) from 1976 the fairly famous clip C’était un rendez-vous.The film shows an eight-minute drive through Paris in the early hours of the morning (05:30hrs), accompanied by sounds of a high-reving engine, gear changes and squealing tires.” It is beautiful.

Tweenbots are human-dependent robots that navigate the city with the help of pedestrians they encounter. Rolling at a constant speed, in a straight line, Tweenbots have a destination displayed on a flag, and rely on people they meet to read this flag and to aim them in the right direction to reach their goal.

“Mission 1: Get from the Northeast to the Southwest Corner of Washington Square Park / time: 42 minutes / number of people who intervened: 29”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

After the jump is a map of the robot’s path

Sam Rockwell is one of those actors who really catches my eye when ever i see him on screen.

He doesnt get too many leading roles, but has stood out enough within his supporting roles to have made me look forward to his upcoming film “Moon” for quite a while now. The trailer is out and, looks quite promising.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The poster reminds me of one for Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris from 1972, who’s themes are quite similar to that of Moon’s.

California’s Glass Beach – suggested post

Commentator  “unicornsuprise” suggested this interesting link about a beach in California:

This “Glass Beach” has weathered away and polished at the once litter to create some fascinating glass stones, which cover the area.

From 1950 to 1967, state officials say, a lumber company owned the land, but most of Fort Bragg used this beach as a dump, leaving tons of garbage, glass, china, spark plugs and engine blocks to rust and crumble at the edge of the Pacific, occasionally reducing the pile with a fire or two.

Then in the 1960s, people wised up and cleaned up, allowing nature to transform that embarrassing history into a striking attribute.

OK I’ve seen this first video on a bunch of places, but put off watching it. Its pretty great. I am sure the American Psycho reference has been made by many for this clip, but really… The things I imagine this guy must get his hookers to do gives me a head-ache.

here is the American Psycho scene for reference:

This next video is a response to my friend Will, who keeps showing people THIS motorbike recovery video.

(i feel like one of those business card guys from the scene above)

Will: New video… What do you think?

Me: It’s very Cool Will, but that’s nothing…

(I imagine your reaction right now Will, as beeing something akin to Patrick Bateman’s is to Paul Allen’s card)

After the jump are three more videos that will probably give you nightmares…
